Aspiring breakdancer Chen Shuo (Wang Yi Bo) has dreamed of being able to go professional, practicing his skills in between juggling family responsibilities. When Chen Shuo gets brought on to veteran street dancer Ding Lei's (Huang Bo) dance team, he thinks he's gotten the opportunity of a lifetime – but he soon finds that Ding Lei had ulterior motives for recruiting him. When Ding Lei's former star dancer comes back into the picture, Chen Shuo's spot on the team is thrown in jeopardy. In Wuhan, China, at the epicenter of what will eventually become the global coronavirus pandemic, a group of ordinary folks is trying to get to grips with a brand new way of life. There is also a couple in the autumn of their lives – a restaurant owner and former medic – who discover a new depth to their relationship as society begins to close down around them. Small business owners also wonder what will become of their travel agency and supermarket. As case numbers rise, so too does the love – with everyone determined to keep smiling, no matter what!

At eighteen, Lang Ping (Bai Lang) was a strong-willed young woman with an unwavering passion for volleyball. Enduring the rigorous training of her coach, Yuan Wei Min (Wu Gang), Lang Ping was eventually teamed up with hitting partner, Chen Zhong He (Peng Yu Chang), a slightly disgruntled fellow athlete who has been forced to put his own career aside to assist with the national women’s volleyball team. Working hard to hone her skill, Ping’s dedication eventually elevates her to the position of the team’s star player. With the entire world watching, Ping leads the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team through a series of wins that culminates in a showdown between China and Japan in the 1981 World Cup.

More than two decades later, Lang Ping (Gong Li) has gone from China’s star player to head coach of Team USA’s women’s volleyball team. After moving to California, Ping went straight to work, preparing her team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Fully aware that her return to Beijing will bring her face to face with her oldest friend and current head coach of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team, Zhong He (Huang Bo), Ping holds nothing back.

After a bittersweet match at the 2008 Olympics, Ping is offered a position as the head coach of her old team. Ready to show the world what she’s made of once again, Ping wastes no time in preparing the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team for a world-class showdown. But will her unorthodox methods lead to success or failure?

In a compilation of seven short films, seven directors explore the history of modern China and its people, going back to the 1940s and the aftermath of World War II, on the eve of the birth of the People’s Republic of China, through to the 1960s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and finally the 2010s, with stars like Song Jia and Ou Hao making appearances.

The first film focuses on an engineer struggling to organize a ceremony to mark the birth of the nation and the second tells the story of a love-sick nuclear scientist. In the third film, a young boy does what he can to help his neighborhood watch the gold medal match of the women’s volleyball competition in the 1984 Olympic Games.

The remaining films focus on more recent events, including two groups of people preparing for the handover of Hong Kong by the British colonial government in 1997. There is another Olympic story in a film about events surrounding the 2008 Olympics, which were held in Beijing, as a taxi driver decides to gift a ticket he had bought for his own son to another boy.

In the sixth film, two homeless boys watch a spectacular space mission in the 2010s. And in the final film, a female air force pilot attempts to ensure that a military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War goes off without a hitch
