Zhou Dong Yu is an award-winning Chinese actress. Born on January 31, 1992, she had no prior acting experience before she was chosen in 2010 by the famed director Zhang Yimou to star in his film “The Love of the Hawthorn Tree,” for which she won numerous acting awards. She is known as one of the “Four Dan Actresses,” one of the most bankable actresses from Mainland China in the early 2000s. Some of her most memorable roles include the films “The Palace” (2013), “My Old Classmate” (2014) and “Soul Mate” (2016) and the television dramas “Sparrow” (2016) and “Love & Life & Lie” (2017).

In a compilation of seven short films, seven directors explore the history of modern China and its people, going back to the 1940s and the aftermath of World War II, on the eve of the birth of the People’s Republic of China, through to the 1960s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and finally the 2010s, with stars like Song Jia and Ou Hao making appearances.

The first film focuses on an engineer struggling to organize a ceremony to mark the birth of the nation and the second tells the story of a love-sick nuclear scientist. In the third film, a young boy does what he can to help his neighborhood watch the gold medal match of the women’s volleyball competition in the 1984 Olympic Games.

The remaining films focus on more recent events, including two groups of people preparing for the handover of Hong Kong by the British colonial government in 1997. During the reign of Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty, Chen Xiang (Zhou Dong Yu) is a maid who enters the palace to work. There, she meets another palace maid, Liu Li (Zhao Li Ying), and the two quickly become the best of friends.

Liu Li harbors ambitions of becoming the wife or concubine of a prince. Given an errand, Liu Li sends Cheng Xiang in her place. Cheng Xiang ends up meeting the 13th Prince Yin Xiang (Chen Xiao) during the errand, and the two become smitten with each other. When the 13th Prince goes to search for Cheng Xiang, who had her face covered by a handkerchief, Liu Li comes forward as the owner of the handkerchief, and the 13th Prince mistakenly believes that the woman he loves is Liu Li.
