Kalki Koechlin was born in Pondicherry to a French father and Indian mother. While being able to speak Tamil, French, and English, Kalki had to learn Hindi to break into Bollywood. Her breakthrough came in 2009 where she played the role of Chandramukhi in the film Dev.D, which won her a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in her debut role. Since then she has been nominated in for another Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, as well as the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress for the same role Kalki has been married to Anurag Kashyap since 2008. On 13 November 2013 both Koechlin and Kashyap issued a joint statement saying they were separating.
