Carina Lau is an award-winning Chinese actress and singer. She was on December 8, 1964, in China and moved to Hong Kong at the age of 15 to pursue an acting career. She made her acting debut in the 1984 television series “The Duke of Mount Deer” and then shot to fame after appearing in the series “Looking Back in Anger” (1989), one of the most-watched shows of all time. She has enjoyed a prolific career in both films and television dramas since. One of her most well-known roles is as the Empress Wu Zi Tian in Tsui Hark’s Detective Dee films, “Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame” (2010), “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” (2013) and “Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings” (2018). Carina Lau also released three music albums in the mid-1990s. Carina Lau married Hong Kong actor Tony Leung in 2008.

As the newly appointed head of the Court of Judicature and Revision, the Emperor Gao Zong (Chien Sheng) personally gifted Dee Ren Jie (Mark Chao) the powerful “Dragon Taming Mace”. Seeing the Emperor’s gift to Dee as a personal threat, the Empress Wu Ze Tian’s (Carina Lau) tasks the head of the royal guard, Yuchi Zhenjin (Feng Shao Feng), with stealing the mace from Dee. But tracking down the elusive Dee and the Mace soon proves next to impossible.

Furious that her plans have been thwarted, the Empress sees an opportunity to exact her revenge when an unknown force begins wreaking havoc across the empire. Blaming Dee for the ensuing carnage, the Empress demands Dee’s head. But Dee refuses to fall prey to the Empress’s plans. Seeking to uncover the truth behind the strange wave of crime sweeping over the empire, Dee soon finds himself up against a number of unbelievable foes.

Realizing his opponents are too powerful to defeat on his own, Dee recruits the help of Shatuo Zong (Lin Geng Xin) and the defected sorceress, Moon Water (Sandra Ma). With these new allies by his side, will Dee be able to stop the monsters responsible for this wave of destruction or will he ultimately fall prey to the powers who wield them?

The third installment of the “Detective Dee” series, “Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings” is a 2018 Chinese action-adventure fantasy mystery film directed by Tsui Hark.

Inspired by an ancient Chinese folk talk, “The Destiny of White Snake” is a 2018 fantasy romance drama directed by Yi Tao and Liu Guohui.

Detective Dee Ren Jie (Mark Chao) arrives in the capital city of Luoyang to work as an officer of the law, known as the Da Lisi. A sea monster has been terrorizing the town, and city officials have chosen the most beautiful courtesan, Yin Rui Ji (Angelababy), to be offered as a sacrifice to the sea monster. Empress Wu Ze Tian (Carina Lau) demands that Yu Chi Zhen Jin (Feng Shao Feng), the Chief Minister of Da Lisi, investigate the sea monster or he himself will be executed. 

When Detective Dee saves Rui Ji from being sacrificed to the sea monster, he is imprisoned by Yu Chi. Sha Tuo Zhong (Lin Geng Xin), the prison doctor, helps Dee escape from prison and investigate the mysterious sea monster. 

When the sea monster is somehow tied to Yuan Zhen (Kim Bum), Rui Ji’s lover, can the two lovers help Detective Dee uncover the sinister conspiracy that leads straight to the Imperial family?

“Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” is a 2013 Chinese drama series produced, directed and co-written by Tsui Hark. It is a prequel to Tsui’s 2010 hit film “Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.” The film was followed by the sequel “Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings” (2018).
